Dedication of The Keith Cabin - Holmes County, FL - Dec. 19th

Looking almost surreal in this scene of friends and neighbors gathered to honor and dedicate its restoration, the Keith Cabin once again radiates the tranquil energy and vitality as it surely did more than 100 years ago. The historical marker tells the stories of Tom Keith, his achievements and prominent role in this rural community.

We have not heard so much about his wives, the women who stood with him, bore and raised his children, and made this cabin a home. Each of the women in their time contributed much and deserve every respect. Perdido Bay Tribe  especially honors the woman we know only as Clyde, a lovely young Creek woman who became Tom's second wife and raised a large family in this cabin. Today we know their descendants as the Sconiers Clan who honor the traditions of both their Scottish and American Indian heritage.

The union of Tom and Clyde represents the peaceful coexistence of Native Peoples and Settlers to the Southeast that has been largely forgotten - crowded out of the history books by stories of war, struggle and the ultimate removal of most Indians from their homeland.  The descendants of Tom and Clyde Keith represent the blended heritage of thousands of others across the Southeast who share a love of their Creek Indian ancestry, and long to learn and honor equally this part of their heritage.
