'Ochesee Swamp - Clay Pot Sitting There'

    Caption on back:

ALCASALICA

Pronounced: al-casa-lika, it is an English spelling for the Muscogean (Creek) word meaning "Clay Pot Sitting There." It is the name of a tributary of the Ocmulgee River in Georgia in the area where Perdido Bay Tribe's Chief Bobby Johns Bearheart spent much of his youth. For 2000 years, the "Mvskoke" or Muskogean (Creek) People lived in these wetlands on farmsteads or in small hamlets along the Ocmulgee River. It was here they developed their farming, fishing, and hunting skills in the very fertile soils around the spring fed ponds and streams.

'We Must Never Stop Dancing'

Caption on back:

Bobby Johns Bearheart is the Chief of the Perdido Bay Tribe of Southeastern Lower Muscogee Creek Indians. His Creek Indian parents and tribal Elders were among the most important influences of his life. His life path is to preserve an ancient culture and bring honor to his ancestors. Dancing is one of the most ancient traditions among native Americans. Far more than a social activity, dances also serve to honor people and events in history, or as part of deeply spiritual ceremonies.

"We must never stop dancing. . .keep the old ways alive with a strong voice," is Chief Bearheart's motto, a reminder to remember and honor our Creek heritage.

It is the inspiration for my painting
