 Timeline of The Southeastern Culture Area

   The Paleo-Indian Period  --  before 10,000 years ago

  The Archaic Period  --  10,000 to 3,000 years ago

  The Early and Middle Woodland Period  --  between 3,000 and 1,000 years ago

            The Adena and Hopewell socio-cultural traditions

  The Late Woodland Period  --  about 1,000 to 500 years ago

            The Mississippian socio-cultural tradition

  The Contact Period   Beginning in the early 1500s

1513 Juan Ponce de Leon landed in Florida  The People of the Southeast were severely impacted by European diseases with some culture groups virtually destroyed.

1539 Hernando deSoto’s army spread chaos, famine and disease across the Southeast causing severe population collapse and destruction of many culture groups.

Mid-1500s to mid-1600s  Period of little outside contact. The People reorganized and began to develop new life ways from the shambles of the past.

Late 1600s  English began to encroach into the Southeast. Called the People “Creeks.”

Early 1700s  English controlled Southeast.  They developed extensive trade in Indian slaves. Colonists began flooding into the region usurping Indian lands and resources.

1830s Indian Removal began.  All Indian people were forcibly removed from their Southeastern homeland for resettlement west of the Mississippi River.
