PBT is actively involved in helping preserve the direct memories and oral family traditions of Southeastern Creeks and other related peoples. Many of our tribe members have shared their stories and we welcome the contributions of others. Some stories may be selected to share on the website.
We receive frequent inquiries from frustrated genealogy researchers trying to learn more about their Native American ancestry. Many have no knowledge of their ancestry other than family lore that for generations has been taboo as a topic of discussion. The story often goes something like, "Grandpa was the only one who knew anything, and he's gone now, but even when he was alive, he refused to even talk about it." Unable to imagine what the secrecy is all about, this great grandchild, several generations later wants very much to know the truth about his/her ancestry.
Historical Research Advisor, Sherry Bloodsworth, volunteers her time and experience to help others learn how to find the little information currently available for non-federally recognized Creek descendants. Admittedly, this can be a frustrating process with many dead ends.
Each seeker can put the need for names, dates and places into better perspective by realizing there is much more they can learn and do. The best way to begin honoring your Southeastern native heritage is by coming to understand all you can learn of our beloved ancestors' history, way of life and struggles to survive as a people.
PBT's Online Classroom & Resources : a wealth of information about the lives of our ancestors can be found in a general study of historical events, circumstances, cultural mores, attitudes and conflicts surrounding them. In the case of our Creek or other Southeastern Native ancestors, because of overwhelming events of history, we may never learn all the answers we seek about individuals and their lives, but we can certainly learn about the very real life and death situations they faced and good reasons for the 'hush-hush' attitude that so puzzles us today.
